What can I do with QuickServe®?
Can I host multiple sites on a QuickServe® dedicated server?
QuickServe® dedicated servers cannot be used for the resale of access to multiple parties.
They must be used only by a single customer (or organization) to maintain their own Web site (or related sites)
through a single account.
pair Networks Resellers are welcome to utilize QuickServe® dedicated servers for specific clients.
Can I defray my costs by sharing a dedicated server with another customer?
Because of the difficulty in coordinating the interests and needs of multiple customers, we are no longer pursuing this possibility. Please consider on of our
High-Volume plans if you have a busy site with relatively low CGI activity.
How much traffic can my server handle?
Quite a bit. The transfer allowance for each package reflects typical usage, and considerably higher transfer is possible with these servers, at only $1.95/GB.
Can I host an adult-oriented site at pair Networks?
We are currently reviewing the possibility of hosting adult-oriented content. Our network capacity has outgrown technical concerns over supporting sites of this nature. Nonetheless, pair Networks reserves the right to refuse or discontinue service for any project that it considers unsuitable, undesirable, or otherwise unacceptable, pursuant to our service contract and policies. At the present time, this includes most adult-content sites.
Can I run any IRC software on a QuickServe®?
No. IRC software of any type is not allowed on pair Networks servers.
Can I use a QuickServe® to run streaming media services?
We recommend using 'byte-streaming' (a feature supported directly by Apache) to deliver this type of content. However, streaming servers such as Darwin and RealNetworks may be used if you prefer. We do not presently assist with the setup and configuration of those services, however.
Can I run a free e-mail service from a dedicated server?
No. We have found that the frequency of abuse incidents with this type of service is high, and reflects poorly upon our network as a result. The best way to host such a system would be with a pure colocation provider.
Can I run a dedicated database server?
Our QuickServe® dedicated servers are also available as
Database-Only dedicated servers, at a lower price. All specifications are
identical to the standard package of that type (QS-1,2,3,4,5,6, or X), with the exception
that Database-Only dedicated servers do not include any Web/FTP bandwidth allowance -- traffic is "local only" within our
network. Please note that for the QS-6 offering, you cannot split a database across the two QS-5 servers.
DB-Only dedicated servers can only be used for sites
hosted at pair Networks. Sites utilizing a DB-Only dedicated server can be hosted on either a shared hosting account or on a dedicated server.
Please contact the QuickServe® dedicated hosting sales team for more information about Database-Only dedicated server pricing.
Is there anywhere I can contact other QuickServe® customers to discuss the service?
Yes, provided you have at least one account hosted with us already. Our hosting customers may discuss QuickServe® with other customers in the private newsgroup pair.quickserve.

I need less disk space or bandwidth than is offered; can I purchase a server with a smaller drive or less bandwidth and pay less?
No. Standardizing on specific hardware and bandwidth allowances improves our cost-effectiveness which allows us to pass the savings on to our customers.
What services does QuickServe® include?
QuickServe® customers receive reasonable installation assistance as well as ongoing support via telephone, e-mail or fax. Hardware replacement and 24x7 monitoring are included. Daily backups for emergency restoration are included for standard server configurations.
Will pair Networks install any software I request?
pair Networks does not include support for software installation beyond the packages already offered. We will apply a charge to help with any such installations. We reserve the right to refuse any installation of software that we believe violates our policies, or presents a possible security risk.
Do I have to upgrade my server to get new versions of your standard software packages?
Standard software upgrades which apply to our shared servers are implemented for QuickServe® customers as well.
Is the Account Control Center offered to QuickServe® customers?
The Account Control Center service has been extended to work with QuickServe; all new QuickServe® servers now have the Account Control Center available for use.
How long does it take to get a server set up?
We fulfill orders in one business day.
Of course, a server cannot be set up unless you make the initial payment and agree to our online contract when you sign up for the server.
Can I run Windows NT or something else?
All QuickServe® servers are configured with FreeBSD. We do not host other platforms, including Windows NT. For those services, please seek a colocation provider or other dedicated server host.
Can I co-locate my own hardware?
Yes, you can co-locate your hardware with pairColo, pair Networks' co-location and networks service. Visit
http://www.pair.com/services/colo/ for more information.
What happens if there is a hardware failure?
Our first priority in any instance of hardware trouble is to get your server back into operation. We have an extensive stock of parts on-site, and will provide emergency parts replacement for failed servers. There is no additional cost to you for these services.
Who are your suppliers?
We have chosen to utilize a variety of suppliers to ensure greater availability and quicker turnaround for all products. We do have specific manufacturer preferences, largely based on our long experience in running FreeBSD servers. We prefer ASUS motherboards, Maxtor or Western Digital hard drives, and Intel Ethernet cards.
Can I have root access on my server?
We do not make administrative privileges available to customers on QuickServe® dedicated servers.
Why can't I have root access?
Administrative privileges are easy to abuse in a remarkable number of ways, many of which compromise the security of our network and other hosts, or invite serious repercussions,
legal or otherwise. We would be unable to provide our proprietary system software such as the Account Control Center, and traffic would have to be tracked by port bandwidth
only (which would affect or preclude the backup systems we use). Also, it would be more difficult to investigate abusive practices such as network scans or Spam.
And of course, third-party software that you may choose to install may include security holes which would normally be caught by our review process.
Billing Questions
Is there a setup fee for the server?
None of our dedicated server packages require a setup fee. Additional software and services may include setup fees. Domain registration fees will always apply.
What is the cost for additional IP addresses?
The initial IP address and domain name are hosted on the server for no additional charge. Additional IP addresses for unique domain names are available for a $5 set-up fee and $1/month.
What if I want to upgrade my server in the future?
Any server that has been in operation for less than 12 months may be upgraded to a current QS-1, QS-2, QS-3, QS-4, QS-5, or QS-6 configuration for a one-time charge of $249.
Servers that have been in operation for between 13 and 30 months may be upgraded for a one-time charge of $125.
Server upgrades after 30 months are free, upon request.
After an upgrade, your new monthly fee will be based on the current rate for your upgraded dedicated server level (QS-1, QS-2, QS-3, QS-4, QS-5, QS-6).
What if I want to cancel my server before the first three months of hosting are up?
The minimum contract length, which must be fully paid, is three months. We will not refund payment for the first three months of service unless there is a reasonable dispute as evaluated by management. If you cancel during a later pay period, we do of course offer pro-rated refunds.
What types of payment are accepted?
We accept checks or money orders in US funds. We accept Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. Drafts or wire transfers are also acceptable, if you arrange these with us beforehand, and notify us when the payment has been submitted. The customer is responsible for paying any fees attached to such transfers by any bank or affiliated service.
What kind of contract is required?
A fully detailed
contract is available online. All QuickServe® customers must agree to this contract in order to receive service. You can agree to this contract online right from the our sign up system. There is no need to sign and fax back the contract.
What are the payment requirements?
Payments must be made on a prompt basis, ahead of services received.
Quarterly payments are preferred and appreciated.
Payment for the first month of service must be received before a server will be configured and activated.
Your service may be discontinued, at any time, if your payment is past due.
