The Basics - Using SecureFTP

pair Networks offers a method of connecting via SecureFTP, also called SFTP, to our servers to provide an extra level of security with your account. This method creates a secure "tunnel" via SSH2, and then uses the standard FTP protocol to upload and download data within that tunnel.

SecureFTP can be used with your main account login but not with additional FTP logins. Additional FTP logins are set up to only use FTP without SSH. The reason SFTP logins cannot be added is that pair Networks usesSH for SFTP, which does not allow for additional SFTP logins.SH is anSource SSH connectivity tool (http://www.sh.com).

The basic information for using SecureFTP with your pair Networks account is included below. While this information was created specifically using Van Dyke's SecureFX program, you should be able to use this same technique with other software. Please refer to the configuration information that was sent via e-mail when your account was created.

General Configuration

up the SecureFX software package. You will see the default dialog screen.

If this is the first time you are using the software, you will have to create a new connection. To do this, first click on the "New Session" button at the top.

When you do this, the "New Session Wizard" dialog will pop up. On the first screen, click on the drop down box and select "FTP over SSH2", then click "Next".

On the next screen, you will be asked what server to use. Put in your server's name (such as qenni.pair.com) or the Web address (such as www168.pair.com). If you are unsure of what server your account is on, please check your original documentation, or contact support

On the next screen, you will be prompted to put in your username and password. If you put them in here, you will not be prompted to log into the server every time. For security reasons, it is recommended that you leave these fields blank and simply click on "Finish".

You will then be brought back to the first screen you saw when you started the program, but there will now be an additional entry at the bottom. Double-click on this entry to access the server.

You will be prompted for your username (if you did not enter it earlier). Put it in and click OK.

You will next be prompted for your password (if you did not enter it earlier). Put it in and click OK.

You are now connected to your pair Networks account via a secure FTP connection! For more information on using the SecureFX software, please consult the manual.

If you require additional assistance with the configuration of your SecureFX software, please contact support for issues relating to the Web hosting configuration or Van Dyke Technologies for issues relating to the functionality of the software.
